What are the best things to do in Kuşadası?

Ephesus comes first: one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the Mediterranean is only about 20 km from the Kuşadası cruise port. After that, Kuşadası rewards whatever time you have. With one day you can add the House of the Virgin Mary or stay in town for Pigeon Island, the bazaar and the old quarter. With a week you can reach Şirince, Pamukkale, three more Ionian cities, a national park with clear coves, and even a Greek island.

What can you do in Kuşadası with one day from the cruise ship?

Most ships give you 7–10 hours, which is enough for Ephesus and one more thing. If you only have the morning, you can still see the highlights of Ephesus and be back in town for lunch. Here is what fits into a port day, in order of priority.

Ephesus

Ephesus was once the capital of the Roman province of Asia, and its main street still runs for more than a kilometre past the Library of Celsus, the Temple of Hadrian and a theatre that held about 25,000 people. The ticket costs €40 and now includes the Ephesus Experience Museum. Because the site has little shade, start as early as your ship allows.

The House of the Virgin Mary

On Bülbül Mountain above Ephesus, a small stone chapel stands on the spot honoured as the last home of Mary, mother of Jesus. It is a place of pilgrimage for Christians and Muslims alike, and it sits in a pine forest that is noticeably cooler than the coast. It pairs naturally with Ephesus: the drive between them takes about 15 minutes.

Pigeon Island and the castle

Pigeon Island (Güvercinada) is the small island joined to the town by a causeway, about 1 km's walk from the cruise terminal along the seafront. Its castle walls go back to the Genoese, who arrived in the late 13th or early 14th century, and were renewed under the Ottomans. Inside is the Maritime Trade History Museum, with amphorae, ship finds and one of the richest collections of scales and weights anywhere. It is also the best place in town to watch the sun go down behind your ship.

The Grand Bazaar

The covered bazaar starts right outside the port gates, so it is usually the first thing you see. Expect leather jackets, jewellery, carpets, Turkish delight and spices. Prices are there to be discussed: haggling is expected, and it goes best with a smile and a clear idea of what you would be happy to pay.

Kaleiçi, the old town

Behind the bazaar is Kaleiçi, the old quarter that grew up inside the town walls. Its narrow lanes of old stone houses, small mosques, tea gardens and craft shops are quieter than the seafront, especially in the afternoon, and the harbour side is lined with fish restaurants where you can have the day's catch grilled.

What to do in Kuşadası if you are staying a week?

A week in Kuşadası gives you time to see the rest of Ionia, the old Greek region of this coast. Each of these is an easy day or half day from your hotel. If you have already seen the ancient city, the Terrace Houses, the Ephesus Museum and the Basilica of St John make a second, quieter day on a private Ephesus tour from Kuşadası.

Şirince wine village

Şirince is a hill village of stone houses about 35 minutes from Kuşadası, known for its fruit wines and its views over the olive groves. It is cooler than the coast in summer. Dr. Asil Tunçer, who has guided in and around Kuşadası for 40 years, suggests spending the morning at Ephesus and the afternoon in Şirince: walk the streets, step into the shops out of the sun and have a Turkish coffee brewed on hot sand.

Pamukkale and Hierapolis

The white calcium terraces of Pamukkale and the Roman spa city of Hierapolis above them are about 196 km inland, roughly three hours each way by road. It makes a long day, but it is the one trip from the coast that most people remember. For an extra fee you can swim among fallen columns in the Antique Pool (Cleopatra's Pool), so bring a swimsuit. Priene, Miletus and Didyma

South of Kuşadası are three ancient sites that see a fraction of Ephesus's crowds, and together they make one of the best history days on the coast:

• Priene, a small hillside city laid out on a strict grid, with the columns of the Temple of Athena against the cliff behind.
• Miletus, once one of the greatest cities of the Greek world, with a huge theatre that still dominates the plain.
• Didyma, home to the Temple of Apollo, which the Ministry of Culture describes as the third-largest Ionic temple in the world.

Dilek Peninsula National Park

The Dilek Peninsula, about 26 km south of Kuşadası past Güzelçamlı, is a national park of pine forest and mountain running straight into the sea. Its coves are the clearest water near town:

• İçmeler, closest to the entrance and the only sandy cove, so the busiest with families.
• Aydınlık, Kavaklıburun and Karasu, further in and pebbly; bring water shoes.

Just outside the park, Zeus Cave is a cleft in the rock with a cold, clear pool you can swim in. The park charges a small fee per person and per car, and it fills up on summer weekends, so go early on a weekday.

Beaches: Ladies Beach, Long Beach and Pamucak

• Ladies Beach (Kadınlar Denizi): about 3 km from the centre, with a sandy bay, a promenade and plenty of cafés. Easy by dolmuş or taxi.
• Long Beach (Uzun Plaj): the long stretch of sand south of town towards Davutlar, quieter and good for families.
• Pamucak: a wide, wild beach near Ephesus, where our horse safari ends. Handy for a swim after the ruins.

Samos by ferry

The Greek island of Samos is close enough for a day trip. In 2026 the Meander Travel ferry leaves Kuşadası at 09:15 and returns from Samos at 17:00, or 18:00 in high summer. A same-day return costs €47 per adult. Samos is in the EU's Schengen area, so bring your passport and check whether you need a visa before you go. The timings do not work for cruise passengers, but on a longer stay it makes a good change of scene.

What can you do in Kuşadası with kids?

Kuşadası is an easy place for families. Children aged 8 and under get into Ministry of Culture sites, including Ephesus, free with proof of age, and there is plenty to do when they have had enough of ruins.

Water parks: Aqua Fantasy and Adaland

Aqua Fantasy at Pamucak is one of the biggest water parks on the coast. Its official 2026 gate prices are 2,300 TL for anyone over 9 and 1,750 TL for children aged 4–9, with under-4s free and a small discount online. Adaland, about 10 minutes from the centre of Kuşadası, is the closer option.
