Why see Ephesus with a private guide from Kuşadası?

Because Ephesus is easy to reach and hard to read. From your hotel it is a short drive, but once inside you are walking through a city that was the capital of the Roman province of Asia, with very little on site to explain how it worked. A guide turns the ruins back into a city: who lived in the Terrace Houses, why the Library of Celsus was built as a tomb as well as a library, and why the harbour street now leads to fields instead of the sea.

That last one surprises most guests staying on the coast. Ephesus was a port city, but the river silted up the harbour over the centuries, and today the sea at Pamucak is several kilometres away. Standing on Harbour Street, you are looking at the old waterfront.

What does a private Ephesus tour from Kuşadası look like, hour by hour?

The start time is yours. In summer we recommend leaving early to avoid the midday sun, and your guide will suggest a time for your date. A full-day version looks like this:

1. Hotel pickup in Kuşadası. Your guide and driver meet you in the lobby. The drive to Ephesus takes 20–25 minutes.
2. Ephesus Ancient City, about 2.5–3 hours. A walk down the main street: Curetes Street, the Library of Celsus, Marble Street and the Great Theatre, with the Ephesus Experience Museum included in the ticket.
3. The Terrace Houses, about 30–40 minutes (optional). The roofed Roman villas above Curetes Street, with frescoes and mosaics. They are shaded, which helps on a hot day.
4. The House of the Virgin Mary, about 45 minutes. A short drive up Bülbül Mountain to the small stone chapel honoured as Mary's last home. Read its history in our guide to the House of the Virgin Mary.
5. The Temple of Artemis and the Basilica of St John, about 1 hour. One of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, and the church built over the tomb of John the Apostle, both in Selçuk.
6. Back to your hotel, or on to Şirince for the afternoon (see below).

Half-day or full-day tour from Kuşadası?

A half day covers Ephesus itself and gets you back to the pool by lunchtime. A full day adds the sites around it at a slower pace. If you only book one day, this is the one Dr. Tunçer recommends:

Spend the morning in Ephesus, then drive up to Şirince. The hill village is cooler than the coast, and in the afternoon you can wander its stone streets, step into the shops out of the sun and have a Turkish coffee brewed on hot sand. It is the best way we know to turn a hot day of ruins into a relaxed one.

Half-day tours

Private tour or group tour from Kuşadası?

Both will get you to Ephesus. The difference is who sets the day. A group tour runs on a fixed timetable for everyone on board; a private tour runs on yours.

A group tour can make sense if you are travelling alone and happy with a set route. If you want to start before the heat, linger where you like and end the day in Şirince, a private tour is the better fit.
