How do the five ways to see Ephesus compare?

The ticket is the same for everyone: €40 per person, including the Ephesus Experience Museum, with the Terrace Houses €15 extra. What changes between the options is who you share the day with, who sets the timetable, and what happens if you run late.

What are the five ways to see Ephesus?

1. Private guided tour

A licensed guide and a driver for your party alone, with pickup from your ship, hotel or the airport.

Best for: First-time visitors, cruise passengers, families and anyone who wants to understand what they are seeing.

Pros

• Only you and the people you came with. We never mix parties into one group.
• You choose the start time, the pace and the stops.
• The day is planned around your ship's timetable by people who know the region, the traffic and the shortcuts between sites.
• Entrance fees are included, so there are no queues or surprises at the gate.

Cons

• The price per person depends on your group size, so a couple pays more per head than a family of six.

2. Small-group tour

A shared tour sold through booking sites, usually with hotel pickup and lunch.

Best for: Solo travellers who like company and a fixed plan.

Pros

• A set price per person, often with lunch included.
• Hotel pickup is usually part of the deal.

Cons

• You share the vehicle and the guide with up to 12 other travellers.
• Pickup is fixed, typically around 08:30, which puts you on site in the busiest hours.
• The pace and the lunch stop are set by the itinerary, and the Terrace Houses are often extra.

3. Cruise-ship excursion

The tour your cruise line sells on board or in its app, run by a local operator on its behalf.

Best for: Cruise passengers who want to book everything in one place.

Pros

• If the excursion runs late, the ship waits for it.
• Booking and payment go on your cruise account.

Cons

• The highest price of the five: passengers report around $199–224 per person for the 6.5–7 hour "Best of Ephesus".
• A full-size coach with 40 or more passengers, arriving with the other coaches from the same ship.
• Little room to ask questions or change the plan on the day.

4. Taxi and audio guide

A taxi to the gate, the €40 ticket, and a recorded audio guide on your phone or a rented device.

Best for: Confident independent travellers on a budget.

Pros

• Cheaper than any guided option.
• You choose when to go.

Cons

• A recording cannot answer questions or read the crowds.
• You arrange and pay for the return trip yourself.
• No return guarantee if you are on a cruise.

5. On your own by minibus

The dolmuş (shared minibus) from Kuşadası or Selçuk, the ticket, and the site signs.

Best for: Backpackers and repeat visitors.

Pros

• The cheapest way to see Ephesus.

Cons

• The signs name the buildings but do not explain the city, so most visitors miss the stories behind what they see.
• You lose time to timetables, the walk from the road and the return trip.
• You miss what a guide with 40 years of knowledge of the site would show you.

Which Ephesus tour is best for you?

Cruise passengers

Choose an option with a return guarantee: the ship's own excursion or a private tour with a back-to-ship guarantee. With a private tour you also avoid travelling in convoy with the ship's coaches. See our Kuşadası shore excursions.

Families with children

A private half day works best: an early start before the heat, a pace set by the children, and breaks when they need them. Children aged 8 and under enter Ministry sites free with proof of age. The Highlights of Ephesus covers the ancient city in about four hours.

Seniors and travellers who prefer a slower pace

Go early and keep the route short. A private guide can plan the walk around your pace and build in rests; the Terrace Houses are roofed and shaded, but reached by stairs.

Christian pilgrims

Look for a route that adds the House of the Virgin Mary and the Basilica of St John to the ancient city, where Paul preached and John is traditionally buried. See our biblical and Christian tours.

Give it a full day and add the Ephesus Museum in Selçuk, where many of the original finds are kept. Ephesus Archaeological and Ephesus Brilliant are our longest routes.

When should you visit Ephesus to avoid the crowds?

Early in the morning or later in the afternoon, and away from the hours when the cruise coaches arrive. Kuşadası is Türkiye's busiest cruise port, and on a busy day several ships land at once: on one day in May 2025, four ships brought more than 8,600 passengers.

What should you check before booking any Ephesus tour?

Whoever you book with, these checks take a few minutes online and protect your money.

1. The agency's licence. Every Turkish travel agency must be a member of TÜRSAB, the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies. Search the agency in TÜRSAB's member database; only Group A agencies may sell package tours to foreign travellers.
2. The guide's licence. Only licensed tourist guides may guide at Ephesus. Look the guide up in the TUREB database, and on the day check the guide ID card (turist rehberi kimlik kartı), which must be worn visibly.
3. A written confirmation. It should name the agency and its TÜRSAB registration, the itinerary, what each part costs and the insurance. An email covering these points is enough.
4. The vehicle. Tour and transfer vans need a D2 authorisation from the Ministry of Transport. Ask the operator.
5. The entrance fees. If fees are "included", the price has to cover €40 for Ephesus, plus €15 if the Terrace Houses are on the route.
6. What to do if something goes wrong. Complaints go to TÜRSAB for member agencies, or to a consumer arbitration committee (Tüketici Hakem Heyeti).
