Can you visit Ephesus on a day trip from Istanbul?

Yes, if you fly. Ephesus is about 520 km from Istanbul by road, six hours or more each way, but the flight to Izmir takes about 1 hour 10 minutes and Izmir Airport is only 45 minutes from the gates. Take a morning flight, spend the day in Ephesus with a private guide and you are back in Istanbul the same night.

We meet you at Izmir Airport, drive you to Ephesus, guide you through it and bring you back to the airport in time for your evening flight. Every entrance fee on the route is included, and the tour costs the same as it does for guests staying near Ephesus. If you are still deciding whether the flight is worth it, read our honest answer on whether Ephesus is worth visiting.

If you have already seen Hagia Sophia, you will find a familiar name in Selçuk. Emperor Justinian, who built Hagia Sophia in the 530s, also built the Basilica of St John on the hill above Ephesus in the same century, over the traditional tomb of John the Apostle.

How do you get from Istanbul to Ephesus?

There are three ways: fly to Izmir, take an overnight bus to Selçuk or drive. Only the flight lets you see Ephesus and be back in Istanbul the same day.

By plane

Direct flights leave from both Istanbul airports: Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side. Turkish Airlines, Pegasus and AJet fly the route every day, with the first departures from around 05:00 and flights back to Istanbul until late at night. Choose the airport closer to your hotel and travel with hand luggage only, so you can walk straight out at Izmir.

By overnight bus

Buses to Selçuk leave from Esenler and Alibeyköy on the European side and from Ataşehir and Dudullu on the Asian side, through the evening and the night. It is the cheapest way, but you start your day in Ephesus after a night on a bus, and you still need a way back to Istanbul.

By car

The motorway runs south from Istanbul past Bursa and Balıkesir to Izmir, then on to Selçuk. It is a good drive for a road trip down the Aegean coast with a night or two near Ephesus, but too long for a day trip.

What does an Ephesus day trip from Istanbul look like?

Your day is built around your flights. Send us your flight times and your guide plans the order of the day around them, the season and the crowds. A typical day looks like this:

  1. A morning flight from Istanbul, landing at Izmir Airport by about 09:00.
  2. Your guide meets you at domestic arrivals. The drive to Ephesus takes about 45 minutes.
  3. Ephesus Ancient City, walked from the upper gate down to the lower gate: Curetes Street, the Terrace Houses (optional), the Library of Celsus, Marble Street and the Great Theatre.
  4. The Ephesus Experience Museum, which is included in the Ephesus ticket.
  5. Lunch, then your choice of extra stops: the House of the Virgin Mary, the Temple of Artemis or the Basilica of St John.
  6. The drive back to Izmir Airport, in good time for your flight to Istanbul.

Which flights work for a day trip?

Land by about 09:00, earlier in July and August so you reach the site before the heat. Then book your return flight to match the tour you choose:

What changes when you come from Istanbul?

Only the starting point. The tours, the guides and the prices are the same as on the cards above. You book your own flights to and from Izmir, and we meet you at Izmir Airport and bring you back there at the end of the day. Send us your flight times and we plan the day around them.

Every tour includes:

  • Entrance fees for every site on the route, including the Ephesus Experience Museum
  • A licensed guide
  • An air-conditioned vehicle with room for your bags
  • Pickup and drop-off at Izmir Airport

Not included: flights between Istanbul and Izmir, and personal expenses such as meals and drinks. Staying in Izmir for a few days instead? See our private Ephesus tours from Izmir, or compare all our private Ephesus tours.

Ask on WhatsApp

Can you stay a night near Ephesus instead?

Yes, and if you can spare the night, the trip becomes much more relaxed. We can arrange your hotel in Selçuk, in the hill village of Şirince or in Kuşadası, and plan two days around it. A good split is Ephesus and the House of the Virgin Mary on the first day, then the Ephesus Museum, St John's Basilica and lunch in Şirince on the second, before your flight back. You could also use the second day for a Pamukkale day trip from Kuşadası or Selçuk.

In summer a night near Ephesus also lets you see the site after dark: from June to 1 October it opens on Wednesday to Saturday evenings from 19:00 to 23:00. Our guide to Ephesus entrance fees and opening hours has the details. Tell us your dates, and we will send hotel options and the total price on WhatsApp before you book.

Can you see Ephesus and Pamukkale in one day from Istanbul?

No. Pamukkale is about three hours by road east of Izmir, so seeing both would mean six hours of driving on top of two flights, with very little time at either site. Give Pamukkale its own day: stay a night near Ephesus, or book a Pamukkale day trip from Izmir on another day of your trip.

When is the best time for an Ephesus day trip from Istanbul?

Spring (April and May) and autumn (September and October) are the most comfortable months: warm, bright and easier on the legs. In July and August midday temperatures often pass 35 °C and there is little shade on the site, so take the earliest flight you can. Flights also tend to cost more in summer, so book early if your dates are fixed. Our month-by-month guide has the detail.

Planning a longer trip from Istanbul?

Ephesus also works as one stop on a longer route. Troy and Gallipoli lie south-west of Istanbul, so many travellers see them first and continue to Ephesus a few days later; read how to plan Troy and Ephesus on one trip.

For pilgrims, our Footsteps of St Paul tour starts in Istanbul and spends 14 days on the sites of Paul's journeys, and our biblical and Christian tours cover the House of the Virgin Mary and the Seven Churches. If you are on a cruise from Istanbul that calls at Kuşadası, book one of our Kuşadası shore excursions instead: same guides, timed around your ship.

What should you bring on an Ephesus day trip from Istanbul?

  • Your passport: you need it as ID on domestic flights in Turkey.
  • Hand luggage only, so you can walk straight out at Izmir Airport.
  • Comfortable shoes with grip: the old marble streets are polished smooth and can be slippery.
  • A hat, sunscreen and water, especially from June to September.
  • Clothes that cover shoulders and knees if you plan to visit the House of the Virgin Mary, which is a place of worship.
  • Some cash in Turkish lira for coffee, snacks and small purchases along the way.
