Why take a private tour from Izmir instead of the train?

Because the train only gets you to Selçuk. From the station it is another 3 km to the gate, Ephesus is a one-way walk, and you still have to get back to Izmir or the airport at the end of the day. Here is one detail he likes to share with guests coming from Izmir. In Roman times Smyrna, Ephesus and Pergamon competed to be the first city of the province of Asia. The rivalry was not only official: city slogans scratched into the walls of the Smyrna Agora record it, in the largest collection of Greek graffiti of its kind in the world.

How far is Ephesus from Izmir?

Ephesus is about 75–80 km from central Izmir, roughly an hour and a quarter by road, and about 63 km from Izmir Airport, around 45 minutes. The drive runs south on the motorway through olive groves and farmland to Selçuk, the town at the gates of Ephesus.

How do you get from Izmir to Ephesus on your own?

There are four ways: the regional train, the intercity bus, a taxi or private driver, or a guided tour. Public transport is cheap but stops in Selçuk, so you still need to cover the last few kilometres to the gate and back.

By train

Regional trains run from Izmir Basmane station through Izmir Airport to Selçuk. The local İZBAN commuter line does not reach Selçuk, so take the regional train all the way. Once in Selçuk, the lower gate of Ephesus is about 3 km away; our guide to Ephesus from Selçuk covers the last stretch.

By bus

Intercity buses to Selçuk leave from Izmir's main bus station, on the edge of the city. It is a good budget option if you are already staying near the otogar.

By private tour

Many guests fit Ephesus into an arrival or departure day. Your luggage stays in the vehicle while you tour, and we drop you at your hotel or back at the airport at the end. Send us your flight times and we will plan the day around them.

Izmir cruise port

Cruise passengers are met at the port, and the same back-to-ship guarantee applies as on all our Kuşadası shore excursions. Because traffic between Izmir and Ephesus is unpredictable, we recommend taking this tour only if your ship is in port for at least 12 hours.

What does a day trip to Ephesus from Izmir look like?

Your day is built around you. Start time, stops and pace are your choice, and your guide suggests the order that works best for the season and the crowds. A typical full day looks like this:

1. Pickup at your Izmir hotel, the airport or the cruise port.
2. The drive south, with a stop for breakfast or coffee if you like. Ask your guide for their favourite places on the way.
3. Ephesus Ancient City, walked end to end: Curetes Street, the Terrace Houses (optional), the Library of Celsus, Marble Street and the Great Theatre. Either gate works; your guide picks the one that suits the day.
4. The Ephesus Experience Museum, which is included in the Ephesus ticket.
5. Your choice of extra stops: the House of the Virgin Mary, the Basilica of St John, the Temple of Artemis, the Ephesus Museum, or lunch in the hill village of Şirince.
6. The drive back to your hotel, the airport or the port.

Smyrna Agora and the Church of Smyrna

The Smyrna Agora in central Izmir was rebuilt after an earthquake in 178 AD with the help of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Its basilica is the largest known Roman basilica, and its basement walls hold the graffiti mentioned above. Tickets are €6 and it is open 08:30–19:00 (Ministry of Culture and Tourism, checked 27 September 2026). Şirince and wine tasting

Şirince is a hill village above Selçuk, known for its stone houses and fruit wines. It fits well after Ephesus as a lunch stop, or as a wine tasting in Şirince.

When is the best time for a day trip to Ephesus from Izmir?

Spring (April and May) and autumn (September and October) are the most comfortable months: warm, bright and easier on the legs. In July and August midday temperatures often pass 35 °C and there is little shade on the site, so an early start matters more than the gate you use. What should you bring on an Ephesus day trip?

• Comfortable shoes with grip: the old marble streets are polished smooth and can be slippery.
• A hat, sunscreen and water, especially from June to September.
• Clothes that cover shoulders and knees if you plan to visit the House of the Virgin Mary, which is a place of worship.
• Some cash in Turkish lira for coffee, snacks and small purchases along the way.
