How to Get from Kuşadası to Ephesus (Distance, Costs & Options)

Ephesus is about 18–20 km from central Kuşadası, a 20–25 minute drive. You can get there by taxi, dolmuş (shared minibus), rental car or a private tour. Here is what each one costs in 2026, where it drops you, and how to time your visit.

How do the ways to get from Kuşadası to Ephesus compare?

How much is a taxi from Kuşadası to Ephesus?

Yellow taxis wait at stands all over Kuşadası and outside the cruise port. For Ephesus, drivers usually quote a fixed price rather than running the meter. Our guides put a fair price at about €55–70 for the return trip: the driver drops you at one gate and collects you at the other at a time you agree.

Before you get in, agree four things: the total price, the currency, how long the driver will wait, and which gate you want. Ask to be dropped at the upper gate and collected at the lower gate, so you walk through the ancient city downhill.

Is there a dolmuş from Kuşadası to Ephesus?

Yes. There is no direct minibus to the ruins, but the Kuşadası–Selçuk dolmuş passes the Ephesus turn-off on the main road. Minibuses leave from Kuşadası bus station (otogar) every 15–30 minutes, from early morning until late evening in summer, and less often in winter. Hotels on the Selçuk road, such as those around Pine Bay, can flag one down outside.

• Tell the driver "Efes" and they will call out the stop.
• From the stop it is about a 1 km walk to the lower gate, with little shade.
• Fares quoted for 2026 are around 120 TL per person each way, paid in cash to the driver.
• To get back, wait at the stop on the opposite side of the main road.

Can you drive to Ephesus from Kuşadası?

Driving is easy: it is a straight run of 20–25 minutes on the main road towards Selçuk. Car parking at the lower gate costs 150 TL (2026).

The catch is the car park itself. In season the queue to park at the lower gate can be very long, especially when several cruise ships are in port. Check the live traffic around the lower gate on Google Maps before you set off. If it is backed up, go later in the afternoon or leave the car and take a taxi.

Rental prices vary with the season: roughly €20–40 a day off-season and €50–90 in summer, according to booking-site averages.

Is a private tour the easiest way from Kuşadası?

Which gate should you start from?

Ephesus has two entrances. The upper gate (also called the Magnesian or State Agora gate) sits higher up the valley. The lower gate (the Harbour gate) is closer to the main road and the Great Theatre. The main street runs downhill from the upper gate to the lower one, so starting at the top is the easier walk.

Arriving by dolmuş or car, you start at the lower gate. You can walk up and back down, or take one of the taxis near the lower gate up to the top and walk down. Our Ephesus walking route map shows the route between the two.

How do you add the House of the Virgin Mary and Selçuk?

The House of the Virgin Mary stands on Bülbül Mountain, about 9 km from Selçuk. No dolmuş goes up there, so you need a taxi, your own car or a tour. The house is open 08:00–18:00, with Mass most mornings at 07:15. Entry is 700 TL in 2026; local operators report it rising to €18 from 1 April 2027. Selçuk is 3 km beyond Ephesus on the same road. Its sights are close together:

• Basilica of St John: €6
• Ephesus Museum: €10

When is the best time to go from Kuşadası?

Go early. The gates open at 08:00, and in summer the first two hours are the coolest and the quietest. In July and August we start our own tours from Kuşadası hotels in the early hours to avoid the sun.
