What is the weather like in Kuşadası?
Kuşadası has a Mediterranean climate: long, hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. In the Köppen classification it is Csa, the classic Mediterranean type. July and August are the hottest months, with average highs of about 32 °C and nights that stay around 22 °C. January is the coldest, with highs of about 14 °C and lows of about 6 °C. Almost no rain falls in summer, and two-thirds of the year's 642 mm falls between November and February.
The air temperature, rain and sunshine figures on this page come from the weather station of the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM) in Kuşadası itself, 25 metres above sea level, and are the official 1991–2020 climate normals that Turkey reported to the World Meteorological Organization. They tell you what to expect in a typical year. For the next few days, check MGM's Kuşadası forecast (in Turkish).

Kuşadası weather month by month
Averages smooth out the day-to-day swings, so here is what each month is usually like on the coast, with the sea temperature and what to plan for.
Spring: March to May
Spring is green and fresh, and it warms up quickly. The rain eases month by month, from about nine rainy days in March to four or five in May. The sea is at its coldest in February and March and warms through April and May.
- March: highs around 17 °C and nights around 9 °C, with about 73 mm of rain. Pack a warm layer and a rain jacket. The sea is about 16 °C.
- April: good walking weather, with highs around 21 °C and over eight hours of sunshine a day, but nights still drop to about 12 °C. The sea, about 17 °C, is too cold for most people to swim for long.
- May: warm and mostly dry, with highs around 25 °C, lows around 16 °C and ten hours of sunshine a day. The sea averages about 19 °C, fine for a short swim on a sunny afternoon if you don't mind cool water.
Summer: June to August
Summer is hot, dry and reliably sunny. Barely 6 mm of rain falls from June to August combined, and in July and August it rains on fewer than one day a month. The heat is fairly dry, with average relative humidity of about 56% in July, and the afternoon meltem wind takes the edge off it. The coast is also cooler than the valleys inland: Selçuk, the town beside Ephesus, averages 34.6 °C on July and August afternoons, almost 3 °C more than Kuşadası.
- June: highs around 29 °C, nights around 20 °C and a sea of about 22 °C. The days are the longest of the year and the beach season is under way before the peak heat.
- July: with August, the hottest month: average highs of 31.8 °C and lows of 22.1 °C, and 12.3 hours of sunshine a day. Heatwaves can push temperatures past 40 °C; the station's July record is 41.5 °C.
- August: much like July, with the warmest nights of the year (22.3 °C on average) and the warmest sea, about 24 °C. The station's all-time record, 42.4 °C, was set on 23 August 2007.
Autumn: September to November
Autumn keeps the summer sea while the air cools. Rain returns gradually in October and the wet season begins in November.
- September: still summer weather, with highs around 28 °C and a sea of about 23 °C, but cooler nights of about 19 °C and only two rainy days on average.
- October: warm days around 24 °C, nights around 15 °C and 7.6 hours of sunshine a day. The sea is still about 21 °C. Expect rain on about five days.
- November: mild, with highs around 19 °C and nights around 11 °C, but wetter: about 96 mm of rain on around eight days. The sea is about 19 °C.
Winter: December to February
Winters are mild and green but wet, and the days are short. Snow is rare: the Kuşadası station recorded snowfall on 16 days in the 52 years from 1970 to 2021, and it lay on the ground on only 7 of them.
- December: highs around 15 °C and lows around 8 °C. With January, the wettest month: about 116 mm of rain on around 12 days, and just over four hours of sunshine a day.
- January: the coldest month, with highs around 14 °C, lows around 6 °C and about 118 mm of rain on 11 days.
- February: a little drier and brighter than January, with highs around 15 °C. The sea reaches its lowest, about 16 °C offshore and colder close to the beach.

Sea temperature in Kuşadası: when can you swim?
The sea off Kuşadası is warmest in August, at about 24 °C, and coldest from January to March, at about 16 °C. It warms slowly in spring: about 17 °C in April, 19 °C in May and 22 °C in June. From July to September it averages 23–24 °C, and it is still about 21 °C in October and 19 °C in November.
These are open-water averages for 1991–2020, based on satellite, ship and buoy measurements. Readings at the shore can differ by a degree or two: MGM's coastal stations along the Turkish Aegean averaged 13–14 °C from January to March and 24–25 °C in July and August over 1970–2025. The sea is also warmer than it used to be. The same stations averaged 19.8 °C over 2014–2025, against 18.2 °C in the 1970s.
For today's reading, MGM publishes the latest sea temperature for Kuşadası on its Piri Reis marine weather page.
In practice the swimming season runs from June to October, with May and early November for people who like their water cool. Our guide to Kuşadası's beaches covers where to swim, and the coves of Dilek Peninsula National Park, south of town, have the clearest water nearby.
The meltem: Kuşadası's summer wind
From about mid-May to mid-September a steady, dry northerly wind blows down the Aegean, at its strongest and most persistent in July and August. Meteorologists call it the etesian wind; Greeks call it the meltemi and Turks the meltem. It brings no rain, it usually peaks in the early afternoon, and it often dies down at night.
At the Kuşadası station the prevailing summer wind comes from the north-west. For visitors it is mostly good news: it cools hot afternoons and keeps the air dry and clear. On windy days the sea at exposed beaches turns choppy, so a sheltered cove or a morning swim is the better choice. In winter the prevailing wind at the station swings round to the south-east.
Best time to visit Kuşadası
It depends on what you have come for. For sightseeing, the most comfortable months are April, May and October. For the beach, it is June to September. If you want both, June and September give you a warm sea with less heat than July and August.

For Ephesus and sightseeing
Ephesus lies about 20 km from Kuşadası, in the valley inland, where summer afternoons are hotter than on the coast, and the ruins have little shade. In July and August, start as early as you can and be finished by late morning. April, May, October and early November are the most comfortable months for a long walk through the site, and early June and late September work well with an early start.
Our article on the best time to visit Ephesus goes through the heat, the crowds and the light at the site month by month.
For the beach and swimming
From June to September the sea averages 22–24 °C and rain is rare. August has the warmest water, about 24 °C. In June and September the sea is 22–23 °C and the afternoons are 2–4 °C cooler than in July and August.
For a quiet trip
From November to March, Kuşadası is quiet, green and mild, with highs of 14–19 °C. In December and January it rains on more than one day in three, so pack for showers and plan indoor stops. Some seasonal hotels, beach clubs and restaurants close for the winter, but the town, the bazaar and Ephesus stay open.
Cruise season and crowds
Kuşadası is Turkey's busiest cruise port, with 617 ship calls in 2025, and the calls follow the weather. According to the Ministry of Transport, 84 cruise ships called in August 2025 and 89 in October, against 6 in December.
The summer peak also falls in the Turkish school holidays, from late June to mid-September (the 2026–27 school year runs from 14 September 2026 to 25 June 2027). On days with several ships in port, Ephesus is busiest from mid-morning, one more reason to start early. Our Kuşadası cruise port guide explains how to plan a port day, and our Kuşadası shore excursions are timed around your ship.

What to pack for Kuşadası
- June to September: light, loose clothes, a sun hat, sunglasses, high-factor sunscreen and a refillable water bottle. Wear comfortable closed shoes for Ephesus, where the marble paving is uneven and slippery.
- April, May and October: layers. Afternoons are warm, but mornings and evenings are cool. Bring a swimsuit anyway.
- November to March: a warm jacket, a waterproof and shoes that can cope with rain.
