Private Ephesus Tours with a Historian Guide
Historian & Senior Licensed GuideLast updated September 27, 20269 min read

A private Ephesus tour means one licensed guide, one vehicle and only the people you came with. You choose the start time, and we plan the route around the heat, the cruise coaches and what you want to see. This page covers which tour fits your day, where we pick you up, what is included, what it costs, and where every number on the page comes from.
Which private Ephesus tour should you choose?
Choose by how much time you have and what you want to see besides the ancient city. All five tours are private, and all include the entrance fees for every site on the route.
| Tour | Length | What it covers | Terrace Houses | From, per person (group of 15) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Highlights of Ephesus | 4 hours | Ancient city and Experience Museum | Can be added | €70 |
| Ephesus, Virgin Mary & Temple of Artemis | 5 hours | Ancient city, House of the Virgin Mary, Temple of Artemis | Can be added | €90 |
| The Exclusive of Ephesus | 7 hours | Ancient city at a slower pace, Curetes Street, Domitian Square | Included | €90 |
| Ephesus Archaeological | 8 hours | Ancient city, Odeon, Ephesus Museum, Temple of Artemis | Included | €95 |
| Ephesus Brilliant | 10 hours | All of the above plus the House of the Virgin Mary and St John's Basilica | Included | €110 |
- Short on time: The Highlights of Ephesus covers the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre and Marble Street in about four hours.
- For the Terrace Houses: The Exclusive of Ephesus walks the same city with time for the Roman homes, their mosaics and wall paintings.
- For pilgrims: Ephesus, Virgin Mary & Temple of Artemis adds the House of the Virgin Mary in five hours.
- For archaeology: Ephesus Archaeological adds the Ephesus Museum in Selçuk, where many of the original finds are kept.
- To see everything in one day: Ephesus Brilliant takes in every major site around Ephesus in ten hours.
Where do private Ephesus tours pick you up?
From any hotel, port or airport within a day's reach of Ephesus. The most common starting points each have their own page with pickup details and the best tour for that trip.
| Starting point | Distance | Driving time |
|---|---|---|
| Selçuk hotels | About 3 km | 5–10 minutes |
| Kuşadası hotels and cruise port | About 18–20 km | 20–25 minutes |
| Izmir Airport (ADB) | About 63 km | About 45 minutes |
| Izmir city centre and cruise port | About 75–80 km | About 1 hour 15 minutes |
| Didim | About 82 km | About 1 hour 15 minutes |
| Çeşme | About 150 km | 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours |
From a Kuşadası hotel
Ephesus is 20–25 minutes from central Kuşadası, and about 15 minutes from the Pine Bay side. We pick up from any hotel at the time you choose. See private Ephesus tours from Kuşadası.
From Izmir: hotel, airport or cruise port
From the city centre the drive takes about an hour and a quarter. On arrival or departure days your luggage stays in the vehicle, so you can see Ephesus on the way to or from Izmir Airport. See private Ephesus tours from Izmir.
From Istanbul, by plane
About 520 km by road, but only about 1 hour 10 minutes by air to Izmir. We meet you at Izmir Airport and bring you back for your evening flight, so Ephesus fits into a day. See the Ephesus day trip from Istanbul.
From Selçuk
Ephesus is 3 km from the town, and St John's Basilica, the Temple of Artemis and the Ephesus Museum are in Selçuk itself, so all of them fit into one day. See private Ephesus tours from Selçuk.
From Çeşme
About 150 km, most of it on the motorway past Izmir. With close to four hours on the road there and back, a full-day tour makes the drive worth it. Leave early in summer so you reach the gate before the heat.
From Didim
About 82 km, a little over an hour each way. A half-day tour works, but most guests from Didim add the House of the Virgin Mary or Şirince village once they have made the trip.
Arriving on a cruise ship
Cruise passengers need a tour timed to the ship's all-aboard time. Ours come with a back-to-ship guarantee: see Kuşadası shore excursions.
What is included in a private Ephesus tour?
The guide, the vehicle and every ticket on your route. The only things you pay for on the day are food, drinks and anything you buy.
Included
- A licensed guide for your party only
- A private air-conditioned vehicle with a driver
- Pickup and drop-off at your hotel, port or the airport
- Entrance fees for every site on the route: €40 for Ephesus, plus €15 for the Terrace Houses and €10 for the Ephesus Museum when they are on your tour
- Tickets arranged in advance, so you skip the ticket-office queue
Not included
- Lunch and drinks, at a place of your choice
- Personal expenses
We never stop at carpet, leather or jewellery shops. If you want to shop, your guide will suggest places, but the stop is always your choice.
How does a private tour of Ephesus work on the day?
The driver drops you at the Upper Gate, you walk downhill through the city with your guide, and the vehicle waits at the Lower Gate. The ancient city takes about three to four hours at an unhurried pace.
- Pickup at the time you chose. In summer we suggest reaching the gate when it opens.
- Upper Gate. The State Agora, the Odeon and Domitian Square, the civic centre of the Roman city.
- Curetes Street. Down past the Temple of Hadrian, with the Terrace Houses on your left if they are on your route.
- Library of Celsus. Then along the Marble Road towards the theatre.
- Great Theatre and Harbour Street. You leave by the Lower Gate, where the vehicle is waiting.
- The rest of your route. The Experience Museum, then any other sites on your tour, such as the House of the Virgin Mary, the Temple of Artemis or St John's Basilica.
The full route, stop by stop, is in our Ephesus walking route guide, and you can time your own visit with the Ephesus route planner.
When is Ephesus open?
Every day, with longer hours from Wednesday to Saturday in the summer season. The ticket offices close earlier than the site, so late visitors need to be inside before then.
| Entrance | Sunday to Tuesday | Wednesday to Saturday |
|---|---|---|
| Upper Gate | 08:30–18:00 | 08:30–20:00 |
| Lower Gate | 08:30–19:00 | 08:30–20:00, plus night visits 19:00–23:00 from 1 June |
| Terrace Houses | 09:00–20:00 | 09:00–20:00 |
With that many visitors, the time you arrive matters. The cruise coaches usually reach the site between 09:30 and 10:00, so the first hour after opening and the late afternoon are the quietest. Our month-by-month guide covers the seasons and the heat.
How much does a private Ephesus tour cost?
Our private tours are listed from €70 to €110 per person for a group of 15, with every entrance fee included. The price changes with group size.
There is no prepayment to send a booking request, and you can pay by cash, card or both.
Tell us your dates, your group size and where you are staying, and we will send the exact price for your group.
Is a private Ephesus tour better than a group or cruise-ship tour?
For most first-time visitors, yes: you get your own guide and start time, with no strangers in the vehicle, often for less than the ship charges. A small-group tour can work out cheaper for a solo traveller, and the ship's own excursion is the one the ship waits for.
| Tuncher private tour | Small-group tour | Cruise-ship excursion | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who is with you | Only your party | Up to 12 other travellers | A coach of 40 or more |
| Start time | You choose | Fixed, around 08:30 | Set by the ship |
| Price per person | From €70 (group of 15), entrance fees included | From about $100 | About $199–224 for "Best of Ephesus" |
| Terrace Houses | Included when on your route | Often an extra | Depends on the excursion |
| If you run late for a ship | Back-to-ship guarantee | Depends on the operator | The ship waits |
Our full comparison of the best Ephesus tours adds two more options, a taxi with an audio guide and going on your own by minibus, with the pros and cons of each.
How did we compare the tours on this page?
Every number on this page comes from a named source with a date, so you can check it yourself. This section explains what we compared, where each figure comes from, what the figures leave out, and how often we check them.
What we compared, and why
We compared tours on the five questions guests ask us most often before they book: who shares the vehicle, who sets the start time, the total price per person, whether the Terrace Houses are included, and what happens if you are late for a ship. These are facts you can confirm before paying.
We did not score how good a guide is, how good the lunch is, or how comfortable a vehicle is. All three change from day to day and from guide to guide, and nobody can check them in advance, including us when we look at other operators.
Where each figure comes from
| Figure | Source | Date | How we used it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ticket prices (€40 Ephesus, €15 Terrace Houses, €10 Ephesus Museum) | Ministry of Culture and Tourism, muze.gov.tr | 27 Sep 2026 | Copied as published, in euros |
| Opening hours | İzmir Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, list for 1 May – 1 Oct 2026 | 27 Sep 2026 | Copied as published; see the note below on the 08:00 vs 08:30 opening |
| Visitor numbers (2,550,458 in 2025; 2,626,753 in 2024) | Ministry of Culture and Tourism, reported by DHA news agency | 2 Jan 2026 | Used to show how busy the site is, not as a forecast |
| Tuncher tour prices (€70–110) | Our published 2026 prices, the same as on each tour page and in the booking form | 27 Sep 2026 | Lowest listed price per person, for a group of 15; the price changes with group size |
| Small-group price (from about $100) | A shared Ephesus tour with Kuşadası hotel pickup, listed on a major booking site | 27 Sep 2026 | The lowest regular price shown, not a sale or promotion |
| Cruise-ship price (about $199–224) | Prices reported by Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean passengers | 2025–26 sailings | A range, because cruise lines only show prices inside their own booking systems |
| Group sizes (12 and 40+) | Booking-site listing for small groups; typical full-size coach for ship excursions | 27 Sep 2026 | Maximum or typical size, not a guarantee of how full a tour will be |
| Distances and driving times | Our drivers' planning times; route planners for Çeşme and Didim | 27 Sep 2026 | Normal traffic, no stops |
Where the sources disagree
The Ministry's ticketing site lists an 08:00 opening for Ephesus, while the İzmir directorate's summer 2026 list gives 08:30 for both gates. We plan every tour around 08:30, so nobody waits at a gate that might still be closed. If you are visiting on your own, allow for the later time.
What these figures do not tell you
- Prices are shown in the currency each seller uses. We do not convert dollars to euros because exchange rates move every day.
- Booking-site and cruise prices change by date and demand, so the price you see may be higher or lower.
- Driving times assume normal traffic. In July and August, or in Izmir's rush hour, add 30 minutes or more.
- What a cruise-ship excursion includes varies by ship and by sailing, so check your own ship's description before you compare.
Our conflict of interest
We sell private tours, so we have a reason to favour them. That is why the comparison also shows where the other options win: the ship waits for its own excursions, and a small-group tour is usually cheaper for someone travelling alone.
How often we check this page
We check ticket prices, opening hours and our own prices every 30 days, and straight away when the Ministry announces a change. The "Last updated" date on this page shows the last full check. If you spot something out of date, tell us and we will correct it.
Who will guide your private tour of Ephesus?
A licensed guide from our team, led by Dr. Asil Tunçer, a historian with an MA and a PhD in History who has guided at Ephesus and around Kuşadası for 40 years and founded Tuncher Tourism in 2025. Before that he guided Steve Jobs and other well-known guests around Türkiye; the list is on our references page. You can meet the rest of the team on our guides page.
What our guides have learned at Ephesus
- Start at the top. Entering at the Upper Gate means the whole walk runs downhill, which matters by midday in July.
- Beat the coaches. The first hour after opening is the quietest of the day; by 10:00 the cruise groups have arrived.
- Save the shade for later. The Terrace Houses are roofed, so they make a cool break when the sun is at its highest.
- Leave the afternoon for the hills. After Ephesus, the village of Şirince is cooler, shaded and a gentle end to a long morning of ruins.

Reviews from private tour guests
Read all reviews on Google“Excellent service, very professional, but above all, very friendly and helpful. The guide, Mr. Erim, was exceptional; he demonstrated enormous knowledge and a great passion for storytelling. I highly recommend them.”
“Had the most wonderful experience on a Tuncher tour with the brilliant Alpaslan as our guide. He was deeply knowledgeable, passionate and enthusiastic about his guidance. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to and learning from him. It was an incredible 'living history' experience watching the history of Ephesus city coming to life. My personal favourite part of the tour was to The Blessed Virgin Mary's House, a lovely spiritual experience. We highly appreciate and recommend with 10 stars, Tuncher tours and will DEFINITELY rebook with them in the future. P.s. they have complimentary water on board their vans!”
“The tour arranged by Mr Asil Tuncer was one of the most thrilling experience I have had. From the flawless organisation to the guided tour, it was indeed an exhirating timeless moments. The visit to the seven churches as recorded in the Revelation starting with Smyrna and concluding with the burial place of St John at Ephesus was surreal. Looking forward to touring again with Tuncher Prive Tourism to Patmos”

Frequently asked questions
How long does a private Ephesus tour take?
Between 4 and 10 hours, depending on the tour. The ancient city alone takes about three to four hours at an unhurried pace; museums, the House of the Virgin Mary or Şirince village add the rest.
Are entrance fees included in the price?
Yes, for every site on your route. That covers the €40 Ephesus ticket, and the €15 Terrace Houses ticket and €10 Ephesus Museum ticket when they are part of your tour.
Are the Terrace Houses worth the extra €15?
For most guests, yes: they are roofed Roman homes with their mosaics and wall paintings still in place, and a shaded break on a hot day. They are included in The Exclusive of Ephesus, Ephesus Archaeological and Ephesus Brilliant, and can be added to the other tours.
What is the best time of day to visit Ephesus?
At opening time, 08:30 in summer 2026, or in the late afternoon. The cruise coaches usually arrive between 09:30 and 10:00, and the midday heat in July and August is hard going.
Can we change the route or the pace?
Yes. On a private tour the guide adapts the route, the stops and the pace to your group on the day, within the time you booked.
Is a private Ephesus tour suitable for children and older travellers?
Yes. The route runs downhill on uneven ancient paving, so comfortable shoes matter, and your guide will plan rests and a shorter route if needed. Children aged 8 and under enter Ephesus free with proof of age.
Do we have to pay in advance?
No. There is no prepayment to send a booking request, and you can pay by cash, card or both.
Do you stop at carpet or leather shops?
Never. Your whole tour is spent at the sites; if you want to shop, your guide can suggest places, but it is always your choice.
